Primarily Learning Secondary Education

For many who happen to stumble ever so eloquently across this blog, you may already know much of the information I about to tell you, for others... well, who cares really.  I am going to Boise State full time right now pursuing my dream of teaching.  Having a dream is one thing; I have had many in my life.  But the problem with many of those dreams is that they were either unrealistic, unattainable, or honestly just not me.  This dream is real, however, and perhaps the best part is that I have the motivation to see it through.

So I kinda feel bad saying this, but this post is acting as part of an "assignment" for my Education Technology class.  I need to create a blog and post something on it.  Luckily I'm ahead of the curve.  Perhaps though, this will give me some more motivation to maintain this site a little more.  (He he, I say that and then we'll just see.)  So I need to talk about my focus in teaching and why I want to teach.  I think this is perfect because I don't think I have done that here yet.  Allow me to clear my throat and then we'll begin shortly.

Hello everyone.  Allow myself to introduce... myself.  So what is my teaching focus?  I hear this question over and over again as I tell people I am a full time student working towards a teaching degree.  I have to borrow my response from an old mentor.  In an interview last semester of my favorite teacher from high school he brought up the same topic.  And my response rings synonymous with his, "I want to teach young people."  That's my focus.  The subject matter of the knowledge I will be measured on for the students in my class will be secondary to the young people themselves sitting in front of me every day for 9 months.  In spite of this, I have to pick a subject.  Okay, so what gives me the best shot at getting a job teaching young people?  Well, math and science teachers are in pretty big demand.  So that's what I'll do.  Boise State offers a Secondary Education, Physics degree that gets me most of the way to 7 different math and science teaching endorsements.  So that's my major, Secondary Education, Physics.  I am also going for a minor in Psychology because I know even if the math/science thing fails, the psychology minor helps me stick out in the crowd when I'm looking for a job.

I am interested in teaching because I can't do anything else.  You name the field of work and I have probably worked in it thus far.  But nothing makes it all worth it like being there when a young person finally understands the information and this light bulb courses through their body language like a lightning bolt.  I worked at the Vineyard Christian Home School Co-op for most of a single school year and that's all it took.  I can't do anything else with my life, no other job will ever come close to the sense of purpose and fulfillment I received while teaching those 5th-9th graders.  I fell in love and I can't go back.
