I present to you the continuing saga of a journal that Jade kept while she was staying in Sacramento alone immediately following Aurora's very premature birthday.

She almost had surgery today, but the doctors are going to wait until she's on a traditional ventilator. Her echo still shows an opening, but she has a chance to heal on her own. She has stabilized and is doing well. Her brain scan showed no bleeding again. :) Sent a sample from her respirator tube to see if infection is up or down. Still on all medication, but has stayed off insulin since yesterday.

Everything is pretty stable. They're weaning her off of steroids. They've increased the pain medication to sedate her - they say to make her more comfortable. She has been very active and would be rolling over if the vent didn't keep her from it! Probably going to have surgery tomorrow, because her oxygen levels are fluctuating so much. They want to relieve the pressure on her lungs.

She finally had surgery today today. Everything was OK, now we're just waiting for her to recover. Her night was good. They said she had a fairly large opening.
[editor's note: The surgery Jade is referring to is called a pda ligation, which is an open heart surgery to go in and seal off an artery that bypasses the lungs (babies in the womb get oxygenated blood from mom). On normal term babies this artery gets pinched closed by Jesus. That didn't happen with Aurora, so Jesus had to use the doctors' hands to close it.]
10 March 2000
She's up on her pain medication for a few days. She's off her blood pressure medicine. She's back down to 60% oxygen. She's back to her wiggly self. :) They took one line out of her belly button. When they get a chance they'll put the other line in her arm. Then she'll get all the lines out of her tummy. She's eating again - 4cc's every 6 hours. Going back under the lights for awhile. She's looking a little yellow. [jaundice]
